Irish Theatre Institute Gap Exchange, Ghent and Waterford 2023
Irish Theatre Institute commissioned Lian Bell to create an international Gap Exchange, based on the principles of Gap Exchange facilitated by Mermaid Arts Centre in Bray.
It is based on the principles that:
– that artists are experts and know what they need better than anyone
– that spending time together informally is a powerful way to make connections
– that hospitality enriches both host and guest
– that well-designed, small-scale interactions can have lasting positive impacts on the practices of everyone involved.
Each artist hosted their counterpart in their home town (Birr, Cork, Galway, Gent, Liverpool, Longford, Utrecht and Waterford) and designed visits that dove into the local arts scene. The programme prioritised local engagement outside of capital cities and embedded flexible support to ensure all artists could take part equally. We also found as many ways as possible to connect with and include other artists locally – whether it was hosting workshops, going on thinking time walks, or simply having a pint or a coffee together.

Centre Culturel Irlandais - Paris, Oct/Nov 2021
Deirdre spent a month in Paris at the Centre Culturel Irlandais as a Draoicht Bursary recipient.
Draíocht is supporting a 1-month residency for an artist working in any discipline, with a clear focus on children and/or young people articulated in the proposal.
During her residency at CCI, Deirdre worked on a new audio drama, researching the children’s stories of Charles Perraut and Madame d’Aulnoy with a view to creating a play focusing on their female protagonists. Seeking Cinderella was the outcome of her month long residency.
